To prevent word from leaking that Darth Vader was Luke Skywalker's father, the scene was recorded with the line "Obi-Wan killed your father," then dubbed over in post production. Only director Irvin Kershner, writer George Lucas, and lead actor Mark Hamill knew the truth prior to the film's release.
