In 1978 Reinhold Messner reached the summit of Everest with Peter Habeler without supplemental oxygen. They achieved what certain doctors, specialists, and mountaineers thought impossible. Two years later Messner repeated the feat via a different route, becoming the first to solo climb the summit.
